7x something different on the BBQ

It’s finally here: BBQ weather! And because here in our little frog country we always have to wait just a little longer for it than the rest of Europe, we obviously have to make something special of it. And by that I mean really special. Have you ever thought of putting watermelon on the BBQ? Trust us: you’ll never want it any other way again.

Avocado
Mashed, baked, stuffed, as ice cream… You can’t think of anything too crazy to do with avocado, but we want it. So it goes without saying that we should also try avocado on the barbecue. Warm avocado, yes or no? We’re not entirely sure in the editorial office yet, but I was a fan from the very first moment. Cut it in half. Not like a kiwi (no unnecessary side note, I know people who do this), but the other way around, lengthwise. Remove the pit and brush the flesh with a little (olive) oil. Place the avocado cut-side down on the grill and grill for about five minutes.
Grilled cheese
For the early birds among us or for people who barbecue all day long: try a grilled cheese on the BBQ. And if we’re going to get adventurous anyway: maybe a pastrami grilled cheese? Use slightly sturdier bread, spread your sandwich generously with butter or a little oil and throw it on the barbecue. So delicious, you’ll probably want your grilled cheese this way all year round. Winter BBQ, anyone?
Brie
Cheese (usually) doesn’t make it onto the menu very quickly at a barbecue. But cheese lovers, pay attention: your time has come. Brie on the barbecue makes for an ideal dip (and a great starter for your hangry guests). Put the brie in a small pan and place it on the barbecue. It’ll be wonderfully crisp on the outside with a grilled edge and nicely melted on the inside. Dip some baguette into the pan or go all in and grab a spoon. Because hey, it’s not often that we get BBQ weather in this country.
Watermelon
When I arrive at a barbecue party, the first thing I look for is watermelon. #Fitgirl? Not exactly, but it’s just so damn delicious. And guess what? You can throw it on the barbecue too. There are two ways to do this. The simple way: add some herbs (coriander, honey) and briefly grill the wedges (or skewers) on the barbecue. Or go all the way, and season the fruit like real meat and voilà: your very own vegan steaks.
Cocktails
No, of course we don’t mean that you should throw your gin and tonic on the barbecue (definitely don’t do that, it would be a terrible waste). But if you put the fruit or herbs that go into your cocktail on the BBQ, you’re fortunately not playing with fire. If you’re making a mojito, for example, you can grill your lime slices very briefly for a smoky twist. Mmm!
Donuts
Just for dessert: ready-made donuts. But from the BBQ, so technically homemade. And above all, very delicious. Only do this with sugar-coated donuts. (Extremely) decadent donuts mainly create an extreme mess. Do-nut grill them for longer than 30 seconds and keep a close eye on them, because they burn quickly. The end result? Warm caramelized donuts with a smoky aftertaste.
S’mores Banana Boats
This one is new to me too, but I’ve already checked the weather forecast to see when I’m going to try it. This dessert is incredibly easy to make, but you’ll be drooling over it for months. The S’mores Banana Boat is a banana sliced in half and filled with marshmallows, chocolate and cookies (or breakfast cereal). You can make it over a campfire, but a barbecue is ideal too. Wrap your boat in aluminum foil, grill it and unwrap! Thank me later.
