8 orders that drive chefs ab-so-lute-ly crazy #3

Frikandel speciaal, a Dutch snack.

In restaurants, chefs sometimes get completely overwhelmed by the nonsense that comes out of the receipt printer during the rush, but the Facebook comments on the article Orders that drive chefs ab-so-lute-ly crazy show that employees at fast-food restaurants and sandwich shops also have to put up with a lot. Frikandel speciaal without onions and sauce?

Orders that drive chefs crazy

Cheeseburger minus cheese is a burger?

Dymphy: ‘At McDonald’s, a customer ordered a cheeseburger without cheese. I said that was just a regular hamburger. No, the lady didn’t want a regular hamburger, but a cheeseburger without cheese.’

Plain frikandel

Debby: ‘I’ll have a frikandel speciaal, without mayo, curry and onions.’

Truly a white lady

Filiep: ‘Dame blanche. Without chocolate sauce, please.’

Do we want more or less fish?

Jeffrey: ‘Fish and chips, but without the chips and with an extra portion of fish.’

Salmon sandwich, stripped bare

Lisette: ‘Salmon sandwich. Without salmon, without lettuce, without cream cheese. So just a plain slice of bread? No, a salmon sandwich with nothing on it.’

Vegan is even healthier

Shoshanna: ‘Healthy sandwich, but vegan. Uh, so a lettuce sandwich?’

Or a vegetarian carpaccio?

Casper: ‘Carpaccio without carpaccio. So just rocket, truffle mayo, cheese and pine nuts.’

A classic

Regina: ‘A Hawaiian toasted sandwich, without pineapple.’

Repainting Rembrandt

Remko sums it up nicely: ‘I think it’s improper to ask for a menu item to be altered in a restaurant because you don’t like something. It’s an insult to the chef, who has done their utmost to put together a beautiful menu. (…) You wouldn’t repaint a Rembrandt either, would you?’
