8x things that taste better when you eat them a certain way
Do you know that food and drinks can taste just that little bit better when you eat or drink them a certain way? I prefer drinking coffee from a mug rather than a glass, for example, and FavorFlav’s Wieke prefers cutting her toasted sandwich diagonally rather than straight across — because, yes, you guessed it: it tastes better. Do you also recognize yourself in the examples above and below?
Delilah: “There’s something irresistible about a Hema smoked sausage from one of those weird little paper bags. And we all take it for granted that it’s totally impossible to spread the mustard from the bag onto it: simply not enough hands, and WHERE are you supposed to spread the mustard when the sausage is in a bag?! And the exact opposite while we’re at it: I’m anti-fries in a cone because I hate ending up with sauce all the way up to my wrists, and I also like to see what I’m getting myself into, so a little tray forever for me.”
Lauretta: “Soft drink from a can. Preferably one of those tall, slender ones. It feels good in your hand, is easy to drink from, and especially the small sips are what make the cola or blackcurrant soda taste extra good. Or a straw. A must if the glass is also filled with ice. Nothing is more irritating than ice cubes sloshing against your teeth. As far as food is concerned, that first lick of fresh Nutella from a new jar is also pretty much heaven on earth.
Sharon: “Have you ever noticed that the first bite of a strawberry is the best? It’s not all in your head! When a strawberry hangs on the plant, the sugars sink downward due to gravity. That also makes the tip the most delicious part. Want to save the best for last? Eat a strawberry upside down. Want every bite to be equally delicious? Cut a strawberry in half lengthwise, so you get the tastiest part in every bite.”
Wieke: “Cutting toasted sandwiches diagonally, or actually cutting all sandwiches diagonally. It immediately looks a lot fancier, and the eye wants something too — it also instantly tastes a lot better, if you ask me. And it takes zero extra effort, so it’s a total win-win situation. And popcorn: it simply always tastes better from one of those cardboard tubs at the cinema. It could be because of the kilos of salt, but even when I sprinkle that over it at home too, it’s just not the same.”
Sabina: “The first and the last bite of a Cornetto; I don’t really care about what’s in between. But that pristine perfect edge when you tear off the paper, and then of course that final lump of chocolate in the crispy cone…yum. And draft beer tastes better than beer from a bottle (and I don’t need it from a can), but that’s not very surprising — everyone thinks that, right?”
