You think these are the most ridiculous supermarket products

Kip uit blik

The shelves are packed with really great and delicious products. But also with products that make you raise an eyebrow. Fried bacon bits, for example. And ready-made stuffed eggs. You went all out in response to our article on incomprehensible products from Albert Heijn. According to you, these really are the most ridiculous supermarket products:

Whole chicken—from a can!

Let’s start with the absolute grossest one (thanks to Daniëlle): a whole chicken from a can! Covered in a jelly-like layer of goo, you can simply slide the chicken out of the can, hop, *plop* onto your plate—and dig in! And would you like some onion with it? You don’t have to make any effort there either; buy a bag of peeled onions—Joyce: “packed in plastic to keep them fresh for longer…”, or simply pre-cut onions. Add a bag of precooked rice, easy does it!

Pancake mix

Yesss, this one’s a classic! Smaakjunks: “Ready-made pancake mix, to which you still have to add eggs and milk. Just buy a packet of flour!” It can be even easier: just add water, shake and start baking!

Light sugar in your coffee?

Casper: “Very special: “light sugar”—and yes, it contains less sugar… 75% sugar and 25% sweetener…”

Cut fruit

Fresh fruit, love it! And genuinely fresh too; like a crisp apple that you can really sink your teeth into. It’s hardly any effort to cut it into pieces yourself. Unless you’re very lazy, in which case you buy a pre-cut apple. At home they turn brown very quickly, but the ones in the supermarket retain their color for a very long time. Iris: “Apples cut into segments—what are you supposed to pour over them to stop them from turning brown…???” In any case: cut fruit; you really don’t like it. Yes, including the canned kind: “peeled mandarins!” Tess wants nothing to do with them. For those who like to pay too much, don’t buy a tub of grapes with stems, but a tub of grapes without stems. It quickly costs twice as much, but it also saves you a lot of work… Delicious with some “ready-made whipped cream?!”, Bas doesn’t understand it at all.

‘Homemade’ starter

Denise: “Green bean bundles wrapped in bacon… how hard can it be to make those yourself…”

Ready-made grilled cheese sandwich

Who doesn’t love a good grilled cheese sandwich? And by that we mean a HOMEMADE grilled cheese sandwich. Not only because you can vary it endlessly (these are our ten favorite grilled cheese sandwiches of the moment), but also because even the simplest homemade grilled cheese sandwich is 1,000 times tastier than a ready-made version. Exactly as Silke says: “Pre-made croque monsieurs/grilled cheese sandwiches are truly the worst.”

Not a happy egg

Precooked eggs, whether stuffed or not, continue to annoy everyone. At Easter, Patty definitely has to walk past the shelf with her eyes closed, because: “precooked and decorated eggs around Easter—horrible!”

PS, a disclaimer: of course, we understand that buying pre-packaged and pre-cut products is incredibly convenient for people with physical disabilities. In this article, we’re referring to people who, just like us from time to time (this is, for example, my favorite ‘homemade’ tomato soup), are simply lazy.
