FavorFlav’s Delilah Warcup – van Eyck’s favorites

FavorFlav’s Delilah can actually never choose, so it took her QUITE a while to put these answers together… But now she knows for sure: Parmesan is her favorite. Or is it salted butter? Or Maldon salt? Or maybe…(sigh)

Always in the fridge
‘Alongside white wine: 5 kinds of hot sauce. From gochujang to Tabasco Chipotle, with a changing assortment in between. My eleven-year-old daughter has her own bottle of Frank’s Hot Sauce. An entry-level model.’
Never in the house
‘Passion fruit. Yuck.’
Favorite ingredient
‘Actually too many to name, but okay, twist my arm: Parmesan. And panko (Japanese breadcrumbs). You know what’s really delicious? Pasta with fried panko and Parmesan.’
Favorite family recipe
‘My mother steams rice like nobody else, and I have sentimental memories of her white rice (she thinks brown rice is ridiculous), fried with egg, with a sprinkling of ikan teri over it. They’re tiny dried, salty fish about an inch long, eyes and all. I always found it so cozy when she used to make this, probably because she often cooked it (as a quick meal) after a long day at work, when I had missed her. Something like that—nostalgic.’
Favorite hangover meal
‘I don’t eat much meat—in fact, I hardly ever eat beef or pork at home anymore—but when I’m hungover I want to sink my teeth into something. Very primitive. Then I’ll sometimes drag myself to a butcher for one of those grilled (rotisserie) chickens. It doesn’t happen often.’
Favorite kitchen tool
‘Microplane FOR LIFE.’
Favorite food series
‘Ugly Delicious. If you read my favorite family recipe, you’ll see the connection: pretty unaesthetic food that still makes you very happy.’
When I don’t feel like cooking, I
‘Pour boiling water over 2 packets of instant noodles in a bowl and steam some peeled soybeans and frozen dumplings to put on top. Spoon crispy chili oil over it and it instantly becomes quite something!’
Guilty Pleasure
‘I only feel a little guilty after polishing off two huge bowls of popcorn topped with furikake all by myself. One is simply pleasure, no guilt.’
Surprisingly disgusting
‘Ratatouille. Zucchini, bell pepper, eggplant: separately, there’s something delicious you can do with each of them. But together, soft-cooked in such a watery stew? Blegh…’
Nickname
‘My British husband calls me ‘The gravy drinker’. Is that bad? Yes, that’s actually pretty bad.’
