A gift from heaven: halloumi döner

Food porn alert: no chicken or veal döner, but crispy grilled, juicy halloumi döner, marinated with harissa and served in flatbread with plenty of delicious samurai sauce. Sounds like the ultimate veggie snack, right?

At the Baltic Market, Liverpool’s first street food hall, food stand Hafla Hafla has, in our opinion, struck gold. Owner Tim Haggis thought it might be a good idea to marinate a large piece of halloumi (a Cypriot cheese) with harissa, thread it onto a spit, grill it and shave it off just like a regular kebab.
The result is cheese that’s crispy on the outside and soft, creamy and melted on the inside. You can then choose whether you want your halloumi döner in a pita or as a wrap in flatbread. Add plenty of onion, lettuce, garlic sauce and samurai sauce, and there you have it: the ultimate veggie snack.
Grilling cheese
Does this new veggie snack sound familiar? It could: in Sweden and Munich, they had already come up with the idea of a cheese döner, namely the cheebab.
You do have to travel to Liverpool for it, but then you can enjoy a delicious halloumi döner sandwich. In the video below, you can see how this divine snack is made.
