A sticker that prevents spoilage: we’re fans

When you buy fruit, chances are you don’t eat it all in one go. From (rotten) spots to mold, say goodbye to that last delicious apple. Hopefully, that’s about to change. Say hello to the anti-spoilage sticker for fruit!

Worldwide, around half of all harvested fruit and vegetables ends up in the bin. That’s almost four trillion apples a year. Yup, that’s a seven-digit number. Shocking, if you ask us. So we wholeheartedly applaud every initiative to combat this waste.

How does it work?

The stickers, specially designed to combat mold, will look like the brand-name stickers currently found on fruit. But instead of the name sticker, which serves no other purpose, this sticker will help your fruit last up to two weeks longer.

The non-adhesive side of the new sticker contains a natural protective layer with plant extracts among its active ingredients. These substances then evaporate and delay mold and rot for up to two weeks. Thanks to the coating on the new sticker, the molds that land on the fruit cannot grow.

Appley ever after

The fruit varieties that made it through the first trial round are apples, pears, citrus fruits and avocados. We’re especially excited about the last one. You often wait forever for your avocado to ripen, only to find a few days later that it has suddenly become overripe, after which you have to throw it away.

The stickers are currently being tested on papayas in Malaysia. It’s not yet clear when—or whether—the sticker will also come to the Netherlands. But fingers crossed, of course.
