Holy shit: this is how much food we waste every day

Did you think supermarkets, the hospitality industry and other institutions are the biggest food wasters? Think again. It’s actually you. You, me and all other consumers.

A third (!!) of all food produced ends up in the trash. 42 percent of that comes from consumers: every year, we throw away 41 kilos of food per person, reports Nieuwsuur.
‘A line of trucks from here to Spain’
On the programme, food waste expert Toine Timmermans said that across the entire chain, around 5 million kilos of food are thrown away every day. “Just think how much that is per year! That amounts to a line of trucks driving to Spain and back again. All perfectly good products that were intended to be eaten.”
Wasted the most
In the Netherlands, bread is the most wasted product: 800,000 loaves end up in the bin every day. To put it in Rob Geus’ terms: that doesn’t exactly make us happy.
