According to TripAdvisor, this Amsterdam restaurant is the best in the world

Last year, they ‘only’ managed thirteenth place; this year, they are proudly at the top. And not just in the Netherlands, but in the world — according to TripAdvisor. Restaurant Bougainville, with chef Tim Golsteijn in the kitchen on Dam Square in Amsterdam, is taking the honors this year: ‘a unique achievement that we can be incredibly proud and grateful of.’

‘From the kitchen and bar team to the cleaners and reception staff: we did this all together,’ says owner Eric Toren.
‘We already thought 13th place was quite something’
And last year’s thirteenth place wasn’t in the world, but only in Europe. That is already quite an achievement, of course, but now it’s an even bigger celebration. Still, a title like this doesn’t come with advantages only, although the champagne was naturally opened straight away.
‘It is true that some guests may now have unrealistic expectations. And that’s difficult: it is a wonderful recognition, but when it comes to food, there are still better restaurants operating at higher levels. Take three-Michelin-starred De Librije in Zwolle, for example. After all, we are a one-star restaurant; we don’t have three.’ For now, those expectations seem to be working out perfectly well, because the award was The Travellers’ Choice — meaning the guests themselves chose it.
