Albert Heijn expands its range of vegetarian and vegan sandwich toppings (and the vegan mozzarella is really quite good!)

Albert Heijn

Holy moly, it’s getting easier and easier for vegans to top a sandwich with plant-based ingredients. Albert Heijn is expanding its range and the space dedicated to it in stores. From this week, more vegetarian, vegan and plant-based sandwich toppings will be on the shelves. Tip: especially try the ‘vegan mozzarella’.

The demand for plant-based cheese just keeps growing. I understand that, because honestly, I’m not really impressed by much vegan cheese. The vegan Parmesan from the supermarket smells like vomit and tastes like it too (sorry, I can’t make it sound any better than it is). But vegan times are changing and improving, because Albert Heijn’s new vegan mozzarella is really quite good.

For your sandwich

Mozzarella doesn’t have much flavour of its own, so don’t expect that from this ‘alternative to mozzarella’ either. But the little flavour it does have is really quite good. And the cheese is lovely and soft. Yes, this is genuinely easy to use in a sandwich. Add homemade vegan pesto (just leave out the Parmesan and you’re already well on your way), rocket and a few tomatoes; a real winner!

Also new: ‘meaty’ sandwich toppings and salads

A total of twelve new vegetarian and vegan products are being added. In addition to sandwich toppings, Albert Heijn is also introducing five new vegetarian and vegan salads. They are all easy to recognise thanks to a new design.
