This year, seven nominees for the most misleading food product were in the running for the award, presented annually by Foodwatch. Alongside Albert Heijn, they were Liga, Knorr, Danerolles, Hertog IJs, Nescafé and Milka. Almost 40% of the 7,500 votes this year went to Albert Heijn.

AH Lekkerbekjes: less fish, a thicker crust

Albert Heijn was nominated for its frozen AH Lekkerbekjes. The reason: quietly reducing the fish content from 75% to 55% pollock and making the crust thicker means you get less fish for your money, while thinking you are buying a full-fledged product. Albert Heijn says that thicker and crunchier crust is exactly what consumers want, but you could also ask yourself: who wants less fish when they are buying fish?

Great, less fish…

Not exactly thrilled with the award

Foodwatch has been demanding for years that manufacturers and supermarkets be required to provide clear information on the front of products about size changes (smaller, less content) and price changes (higher, more expensive). With the Golden Wind Egg, they went to Albert Heijn’s headquarters in Zaandam. The red carpet was not exactly rolled out; Albert Heijn disagrees with the nomination and therefore refused to accept the award. They had to leave the trophy at the goods receiving department.
