Albert Heijn’s Cronaantje Is a Big Failure

No, I’m sorry. As far as I’m concerned, Albert Heijn’s Cronaantje is not a success. The idea behind it, conceived by children and made with the help of AI, has a terrible execution… You don’t want to eat this at the Easter table. Sorry.

I know. My opinion probably won’t go down well with everyone. But I have to be honest. I tested the Cronaantje an hour ago and I’m still feeling nauseous. That can’t be the intention when you have to sit at the Easter table in your Easter best, right?
Croissant meets banana
For those who haven’t checked TikTok or been to Albert Heijn yet: the Cronaantje is the supermarket’s newest Appie addition to the pastry section. It’s a mini croissant with banana cream and a layer of white chocolate flavoured with banana. The chocolate layer is yellow. Unmistakably banana, then. You’ll find the Cronaantje in Albert Heijn’s chilled pastry section, next to the Crompouce (oh no, tompouce-croissant).

A big miss
Why is the Cronaantje a big miss as far as I’m concerned? First of all: it’s incredibly, incredibly sweet. After a serious sugar rush, all I want to do now is sleep on the sofa for the rest of the day. Secondly: the croissant simply isn’t good. Dry and chewy, I literally had to tear the dough apart with my teeth. And thirdly, it’s just too banana-heavy. Isn’t that the point, you might think? Believe me, a little less banana would not have been a bad idea at all. This tastes as if you’re wolfing down an entire bag of banana-shaped sweets in one go.
Crompouce fans will probably queue up for it (because it does resemble one) and a bright yellow croissant is sure to look fun on the Easter table. But the execution: no. Curious? For €4.99, you can take home a box of 4 small Cronaantjes. At Albert Heijn, that is.
