Uhm, what? Albert Heijn sells pineapples without crowns
Albert Heijn often experiments with striking, strange and sometimes downright incomprehensible products. This week we spotted a new product that made us blink twice: a pineapple without a crown. No, pineapple isn’t new. But a de-crowned pineapple?! Does this strange novelty take the crown?
It looks so strange too, a pineapple without a crown. A little bare. Naked, even. As if it isn’t quite finished. And I don’t know why, but it also makes me a little sad. You wouldn’t leave the queen of the fruit department on the shelves without her crown, would you?
Pineapples without crowns: a brilliant idea?
In short, plenty of questions for Albert Heijn. As it turns out, the crownless pineapple is a genuine first. No other supermarket chain had thought of this before. Does this mean it’s a brilliant idea from Albert Heijn? Or… is it really a brilliant idea?
As it turns out, the crownless pineapple should make transport more efficient. A pineapple without a crown takes up much less space than one with a crown. As a result, according to Albert Heijn, ‘5000 extra fruits fit in a container’, allowing the supermarket to reduce CO2 emissions by 30%. We don’t know exactly how this is calculated, but we immediately wonder what happens to all those leftover crowns. According to the supermarket, they remain in Ecuador. ‘20% is used as new plants and the remaining 80% is processed into compost.’
April Fools’ joke?
Okay, so the idea behind it is good. We’re happy to crown Albert Heijn for that. But still… you do wonder whether it’s almost April 1. And why the pineapple is once again at the center of a controversy (everyone knows the pineapple-on-pizza controversy—and do you still remember #FreedomPineapple?).
