This Is the Least Favorite Pizza Topping (No, It’s Not Pineapple)

Favorite pizza toppings are a matter of taste. If you’re into vegetarian food, you might order a pizza with artichokes, the meat lovers’ pizza is a hit with true carnivores, and then there are the tropical types who love eating pizza topped with pineapple. But which topping does almost nobody like? A research agency in America looked into it. The answer is surprising.

The American research agency presented around six thousand people with the menu of an average pizza and asked them to choose. The participants weren’t asked to name their favorite pizza, but rather the topping they would least like to find on their pizza. The conclusion: most test subjects chose anchovies when asked about their least favorite pizza topping.
Get Rid of Those Salty Little Fish
More than 60 percent of the participants in the study mentioned anchovies. Next on the list, at 52 percent, was eggplant, followed by artichoke, broccoli and—there it is—pineapple. The study also revealed a generational difference: participants over 54 in particular dislike anchovies—more than 70 percent of them. Younger people do like the little fish: fewer than half of the participants between 18 and 25 named anchovies as their least favorite.

Eggplant in Second Place
So why are anchovies still on every menu? Is there a large group of die-hard anchovy lovers? Not really—only 8% of the test subjects actually like anchovies. Eggplant has even fewer fans: just 6 percent of participants named it as their favorite.
The study also showed which topping is the favorite of most Americans: pepperoni. So if you have to order pizza for people you don’t know very well, and you’re sure they eat meat, a pepperoni pizza is a safe choice.
