Jumbo introduces additional measures to combat shoplifting

Jumbo Supermarkets is introducing additional measures over the coming weeks to combat shoplifting. There will be more camera surveillance in all stores, and spot checks at the self-checkouts will be carried out more frequently. At the same time, Jumbo is testing additional measures in various stores across the country — and some are more fun than you might think.

Some time ago, Jumbo was already in the news with its shoplifting problem. In many stores, theft amounts to around one percent of total turnover, which would stand in the way of price reductions. And that’s quite frustrating, to say the least, because the price of groceries is going through the roof (especially since olive oil has risen enormously in price). It is nice, though, that Jumbo regularly has really good (buy one, get one free) offers, such as the award-winning Wapenaer cheese recently. And now the filter coffee — which has also won an award, by the way.
Shoplifting: checking receipts
Some stores are already carrying out more intensive spot checks at the self-checkouts. Jumbo is also testing receipt checks and (more) bag checks at several locations, in addition to the spot checks at the self-checkouts. New software should use AI to recognise unusual customer behaviour in the store. The trials are expected to last around three months. Depending on how successful the measures being tested are, Jumbo will introduce them nationwide. The so-called ‘short receipt’ at the self-checkout will also be adjusted. From now on, it will still list every scanned product, allowing your receipt to be checked after you leave the checkout.

Jumbo Winwheel
And because the measures mentioned above are unpleasant for shoppers, Jumbo has also come up with something to make these checks a little more fun: the Jumbo Winwheel. This Winwheel will appear in stores from mid-March. After a flawless, extensive spot check, you can spin the ‘shopping wheel’ to win a free product or another little treat.
