Also hate a wooden spoon in your ice cream? This ice cream parlour has the solution

Plastic spoons are now completely out of the question (in fact, they have been banned since July 2021), because: bad for the environment. I get that, but I really think the alternative — a wooden spoon — is absolutely awful. It doesn’t do the flavour of the ice cream any favours. Put simply: it seriously ruins the taste.

Ugh, a wooden spoon in your ice cream
Fortunately, I’m not the only ice cream lover who feels this way, but an ideal alternative had yet to emerge. Until now, that is, because Van Swoll ice cream parlour in Apeldoorn says it has found the perfect solution.
‘We don’t want to compromise on the flavour of the ice cream’
…According to ice cream parlour owner Klaas Brasjen. Well Klaas, I couldn’t agree more. The wooden spoon was therefore — quite rightly — quickly rejected at Van Swoll. They first tried a test with pressed cardboard, but that didn’t go very smoothly either: the moisture from the ice cream made it very limp. On to the next idea, then.
This cardboard spoon is still an option (they bought quite a lot of them), but by now the hit of the moment there is the stainless-steel spoon. Brilliant, right? ‘The suitable alternative was more obvious than initially thought. Because how do people eat a bowl of ice cream at home? Simply with a sturdy stainless-steel teaspoon.’ Well, you’re absolutely right. And after use, you can throw this spoon into a bin, after which Van Swoll cleans them again.
Of course, a spoon disappears every now and then, but that’s no big deal. Seriously, this is such a good plan. Incredibly obvious, and yet I haven’t seen it at a single ice cream parlour. I predict this will be the trend of the summer.
