Amazing: this apple pie can actually fit through the letterbox

I’ve already received quite a few things through the letterbox during these coronavirus times; #SupportYourLocals food packages, Marktplaats finds, cards and gifts from friends, but an apple pie? No, not that yet. And yet, it is possible.

Bakkerij Margriet from Gorinchem has designed their apple pie in such a way that it can fit through the letterbox. Especially to make these coronavirus times a little more enjoyable. How fun is that?!

It doesn’t get damaged

“We were a little worried about what the pie would look like if it dropped onto the floor through the letterbox, but it turns out to be fine,” says Mathilde Verbeek, who started the project, in AD.

Family project

Her grandparents, Dirk (86) and Lenie (84) Bouman, are at home in quarantine. But they aren’t bored: they are busy peeling the organic apples. Their daughter Margriet – who runs Bakkerij Margriet in Gorinchem – then bakes pies from them. A real family project.

Huge success

It’s a huge success. “We’re getting lots of requests for pies for grandparents, but companies that want to surprise their employees at home have also found us by now,” Margriet tells Editie NL. “People get tears in their eyes when they open the door. You buy the pie for ten euros, but you get 100 euros’ worth of joy.”

Here’s where you order the letterbox apple pie

Anyone who orders the artisanal pie before 3:00 p.m. will, in principle, have it at home the next day. Although things are so busy now that the family already says on their website that it may take a little longer than usual.

The letterbox apple pie can be ordered from anywhere in the Netherlands via bakkerijmargriet.nl.
