Recipe: apple pie French toast

Recently, I came across a wonderfully hypnotic video of Apple Pie Stuffed French Toast. In other words: apple pie French toast. An apple pie and a toasted sandwich in one, a brilliant idea, if you ask me. And so easy to make, too!

I don’t know whether it’s a foodie thing to become completely obsessed with an ingredient or dish every once in a while. But it happens to me regularly. From pumpkin spice cashews to deep-fried salmon skin and sprinkling the za’atar spice blend over everything. Some obsessions can be quite persistent, much to the great amusement—or aggression—of my housemates (yes, I have an actual za’atar ban). And now there’s the apple pie French toast obsession. Because I’m sure this will be a huge hit with everyone, and with you too, I’d love to share the recipe.

How to make apple pie French toast

  1. Put the following ingredients in a bowl: the eggs, vanilla extract, granulated sugar and a pinch of cinnamon, and whisk until smooth.
  2. Heat a frying pan with some butter and fry the small pieces of apple for about 3 minutes; stay nearby and stir.
  3. Add the brown sugar, a little more cinnamon and the water to the apple mixture and cook until the apple has softened. You can optionally add some currants and raisins. Is the mixture becoming too dry? Add a little extra water.
  4. Spread the apple mixture over one slice of bread and place the other slice on top.
  5. Carefully dip the bread into the egg mixture on both sides.
  6. Heat a pan with butter again and fry the French toast on both sides until the bread is golden brown.
  7. Optional: sprinkle with powdered sugar and add a generous dollop of whipped cream.
