Are frozen vegetables just as healthy as fresh vegetables?

What would you rather buy? A broccoli from the fresh produce section or frozen florets from the freezer? If you immediately think that frozen is less good, read on.

Because the idea that frozen vegetables are less healthy than fresh vegetables is something we can immediately dispel. In fact: sometimes frozen vegetables are even healthier.
From field to store
That’s because when you buy vegetables at the supermarket, you actually have no idea how long it has taken—let’s stick with broccoli—for them to get from the field to the store. Maybe even days. And if you then store it in the fridge for a while, your broccoli is much less fresh than you might think.
More vitamins
Frozen vegetables are frozen immediately after they come from the field and are therefore always perfectly fresh. Contrary to what many people think, they do not contain fewer vitamins and minerals than fresh vegetables. Quite the opposite, in fact: they often contain more, nutrition expert Karolien Olaerts explains to AD. “The vegetables are frozen a few hours after harvesting at around minus 35 degrees Celsius to minus 40 degrees Celsius. The intense freezing process ensures that the cells are barely damaged, so the micronutrients are preserved.”
Into the cart
The conclusion? Next time, simply put that underrated frozen vegetable in your cart. At least as healthy and often quite a bit cheaper, straight from the freezer.
