This is why a pizza is round and the pizza box is square

A pizza is round, but the pizza box is square. To this day, we had never really wondered why a pizza isn’t actually put in a round box. Until now. So it’s high time we looked into it.

Whether there are pineapple pieces or frikandel on your pizza: it is always round. That’s because, since time immemorial, pizza makers have spun the dough on their fingers so that air gets into it and the dough can rise better. The spinning automatically creates a round pizza base. These days, you see fewer shows in which the dough flies through the air, and pizza makers spin the dough around on the work surface, pressing the air into it with their fingertips as they turn it.

In the mid-1950s, people also started making square pizza bases, as this allowed every bit of space in an oven to be used. Yet square pizzas never became the norm. Round pizzas are easier to make and give us that true pizza feeling.

Smartly designed

The fact that the box containing the pizza is always square has several reasons. First, square pizza boxes are easier to stack. Producing a square box is also easier and cheaper. A round pizza box requires more specially treated cardboard to prevent grease from being absorbed by the box than a square box does.

Crispy all the way to your door

Finally, the square shape ensures that your pizza is still crispy when it is delivered to your home. How? Water vapour can escape through the holes, while the empty cardboard corners ensure that warm air is retained. If that weren’t the case, the pizza would quickly become a soggy mess.
