It’s a household name among Rotterdam residents: Zalmhuis. At the foot of the Van Brienenoord Bridge, with spectacular views over the IJssel and Maas rivers, this has been an iconic spot for generations. After an extensive renovation—and just look how beautiful it has become!—Zalmhuis will reopen on Saturday, February 8, 2020. Do yourself a favor and go!

Keta salmon

Not only because of the colorful and striking interior, but also because of the excellent menu. Here you can eat the most exclusive salmon in the world: Keta salmon from Alaska. This salmon is caught by the Yup’ik community, far from the inhabited world. This community has been fishing for Keta salmon for 10,000 years. During the short summer, the salmon swim upstream from the sea into the broad Yukon River. And in the Netherlands, you can eat this exclusive salmon only here.

High salmon

But there’s more for salmon lovers. Name me another restaurant that has a ‘high salmon’ on the menu alongside a ‘high wine’. At Zalmhuis, you can order exactly that. During a two-hour salmon feast, you’ll enjoy, among other things, house-smoked salmon with Tsar caviar, salmon marinated in Zalmhuis gin with piccalilli, and crispy Sockey salmon with a ginger, soy & crispy nori glaze.

Sushi and meat

The menu also features delicious sushi, other types of fish (such as tuna from the water grill), vegetables (how about a Healthy Veggie sharing platter?) and meat (including Irish beef carpaccio, chicken thigh skewers and a Black Angus burger). Whether you sit indoors or outside, there’s plenty to feast your eyes on!
