At this running race, you devour not only miles but also donuts

No motivation to go running? What if you were allowed to eat donuts during your run—would that be enough motivation for you? Then take part in the Krispy Kreme Challenge, a running race in Raleigh, North Carolina. Run eight kilometers, and eat twelve donuts halfway through: at least this way, working out remains a little fun.

The event began sixteen years ago as a joke: students ran four kilometers to the donut shop, stuffed twelve of those sticky things down their throats, and ran back to the dorm. Now it is an official running race, the Krispy Kreme Challenge, which more than five thousand people took part in this year. The rules are simple: five miles, twelve donuts, all within an hour. Don’t make it in time? Then you’re disqualified. Yes, they have to be strict.

Not-so-good workout

Running eight kilometers burns 700 calories. And those donuts provide 2,500 calories altogether. Looking at it that way, it’s not exactly a good workout. But it is challenging, because most participants breeze through those miles and actually struggle with the eating. Not surprising, because how do you train for something like this?

Arrange your own donuts

The running race is for charity, with the proceeds (this year: 175,000 dollars) going to the children’s hospital in the city. Want to take part? The next edition will be held again next February. And if you don’t fancy traveling to America: you can also take part virtually, with your own team in your own hometown. You’ll just have to arrange those donuts yourself, then.
