Bad news: every hot dog bun costs you 35 minutes of your life

Love a hot dog? We get it, we do too. One of those deliciously soggy white buns, spreading on a generous dollop of mayo and then manoeuvring two or three hot dogs on top. Yes, a hot dog: sometimes the best thing there is. Especially with a hangover, or when you’re still half-drunk. But guess what? Our colleague Livia from Amayzine discovered that, according to a study, every hot dog you eat would cost you 35 minutes of your precious life. Whaaaaat?!

According to a study by the University of Michigan School of Public Health, a hot dog is actually much worse than we thought. And no, whether it’s a hot dog, smoked sausage or frankfurter makes no difference—the distinction isn’t there. One hot dog contains 80 calories, but that’s not all. The meat is mainly scraps: not exactly healthy for your body, then.

Unhealthy sausage

There are also various colourings and other ‘bad’ substances in hot dogs. These substances are added to keep them fresh for longer and to improve the flavour. After all, they always look the same: bright pink. If you think about it for too long, it becomes considerably less appealing, doesn’t it? Suddenly I can hear you thinking: I am NEVER eating this again. Even though just a moment ago it seemed so delicious, with that half-hangover.

Have a hot dog bun every now and then

Anyway. Hot dogs themselves aren’t healthy, and neither does that soggy bun help; the sauces aren’t great for your waistline either, and you won’t get your vitamins from those fried onions. In short: unhealthy food. You can certainly have one once a year, don’t worry. Life has to remain enjoyable. But not too often, otherwise the charm disappears straight away. Do you eat an extra carrot around those days? It might save you another five minutes.
