Bartenders help women out of trouble: men, do this!

Blije barman

They mix the perfect pornstar martini for you, slide the bar snacks your way at just the right time and pour the best beers: honestly, bartenders can take your entire evening from mediocre to extraordinarily top-notch. And sometimes… they’re so sensible and helpful that they can rescue women from a difficult situation.

It started in England. If you ask at the bar whether Angela is working tonight, the staff know enough: you need help getting rid of a pushy (or worse) person. They can then guide you outside through the kitchen and staff entrance, call the police or simply stay near you until a friend has arrived to help.

A good idea that is also catching on in the Netherlands. Posters in the ladies’ toilet let women know what to do and how it works. Is Angela not working at your place? Then make use of these tips.

Mobile phone

Laura: ‘I was sitting at the bar yesterday when the bartender said to me: you have to see what my sister just sent me! He handed me his phone, which displayed the message: whatever you do, don’t start talking to the man on your right. Men, you should do this too if you can!’

Can you call for a moment?

Ty: ‘I worked as a doorman. If a man and a woman left together and the woman had had far too much to drink and could no longer stand on her feet, I would ask the man: can you call her phone for a moment? If he didn’t have her number in his phone, I made sure they didn’t go home together.’

In an apartment

Jerica: ‘I was in England on an exchange programme. I was sitting alone in a pub, took a sip of my beer and then everything went black. I woke up in the apartment of a group of girls who had looked after me all night so that nothing would happen to me.’

Finish your beer and leave

Charity: ‘In an Irish pub in New York, some guy kept bothering me; he wouldn’t leave me alone. The bartender banged hard on the bar and said: can’t you hear that she’s not interested in you? Finish your beer and get out. I thought it was typically Irish that he was allowed to finish his beer first.’

Falls off the bar stool

Mags: ‘First date; after a few drinks, my date staggered off to the toilet. The bartender came over to me and told me that my date had asked him to make my drinks extra strong. He hadn’t done that, but he had made my date’s drinks extra strong. I asked him to make my drinks completely alcohol-free. When my date fell off his bar stool, completely drunk, I could calmly and soberly go home alone.’

Beer mat

Lulu: ‘I was alone in a bar. When I went to the toilet, the bartender put my drink behind the bar with a beer mat on top. That earned him a big tip.’

Play along

Sydney: ‘I was out with a friend. A girl joined our table and said: hey, there you are! We played along, pretending we knew her. Thank you, she said later. That scary guy had been following me since the dry cleaner’s, and now I’ve lost him.’

Hey, girlfriend

Rei: ‘I’ve pretended to be someone’s friend before because I saw that she was being followed by some guy. Hi, girlfriend, I said to her, and I walked with her until she was safe. She was so relieved.’

Out of the bar

Hammertime: ‘My story: I was in a pub and a man put his hand on my butt. The bartender saw it and said: do you like that? No, I said. He threw the man and his friends out of the place.’

A little later

Angeline: ‘I was out with friends. We saw that a girl was being harassed by a man in the pub. We walked over to her and said: hey, there we are, sorry we’re a little late. And the man made himself scarce.’
