Bizarre: murderer betrays himself through… a pizza crust

Pizzakorst in doos

Just great. You think you’ve erased every trace of your deed as a murderer, only to be betrayed by… a pizza crust. That’s what happened to a serial killer in New York, who was arrested by American police a few days ago.

The man is a suspect in the Gilgo Beach case. It’s a case that has kept authorities in America busy for many years. Since 2010, human remains have been found on Long Island – an island just off the coast of New York City. At least 10 people were found to have been murdered. American authorities strongly suspected that the perpetrator was a serial killer, but they never found convincing evidence. Until now.

DNA

About a year ago, the suspect who has now been arrested first came into the picture. His pickup truck was recognized by a witness. The witness had also seen the vehicle in 2010, when the man presumably began killing. From then on, authorities decided to keep a close eye on the man. How did they do that? Among other things, by regularly checking his garbage container. Who knows, it might contain DNA material that would eventually match the DNA of one of the victims.

Betrayed by your pizza crust

This week, they hit the jackpot. A piece of pizza crust was found in the garbage container, containing usable DNA material. That DNA material matched the DNA from a hair found on one of the victims’ clothing. And just like that, a delicious piece of pizza suddenly becomes your own biggest betrayer. What do we learn from this? Always eat your pizza crusts.
