An extraordinary story from France: a real mafia boss has been unmasked there. Eduardo Greco was arrested in Saint-Étienne. Do you know the place? Have you ever happened to eat a divine pizza there? Then there’s a chance it was made by Greco.

He fled Italy in 2006, where he was being prosecuted for murdering two brothers in the 1990s. They were members of a rival gang, and when the case came before the court in 2006, Greco decided he’d had enough.

Beware of the ‘Ndrangheta

That is the name of the gang Greco belonged to, and it is still considered Italy’s most powerful criminal organization. Its top boss, Matteo Messina Denaro, was arrested in Palermo two weeks ago. It is possible that Greco’s arrest is connected to that; he was arrested in the French town shortly afterwards.

He had been living in France since 2014 and had assumed another identity. The people there knew him as Paolo Dimitrio, a passionate pizza maker. In 2021, he was even interviewed on television about the ‘regional and homemade dishes’ he served at the restaurant.

Well, now we know that too: someone can be a cold-blooded member of the mafia and still have a love of pizza. Can we now say that the love of pizza is simply universal? Surely, right?
