Bizarre: this is what airplane meals looked like in the sixties

Did you know this about airplane meals: meals have been served on airplanes for a hundred years, they are usually assembled and prepared about ten hours before departure, and the pilot and co-pilot are served different dishes. Really!

Those airplane meals that everyone complains about are, in fact, a huge industry with an annual turnover of around 20 billion euros. All those containers, packages and bags from airplane food also create an enormous mountain of waste: almost 6 million tonnes in total (in 2017), and hardly any of it is recycled. Don’t fancy that soulless bowl of pasta with strange sauce? It’s unwise not to eat anything at all during a flight. At the very least, bring a sandwich or some of those salty snacks, with a glass of tomato juice, the most iconic airplane drink.

Delicacies in the air

When you see these photos of the meals that airline Scandinavian Airlines served on board between 1950 and 1980, you’ll fall right out of your seat: fresh lobster! Ham! A cheese cart! And a sommelier! They are images from the airline’s folders and brochures, published to celebrate its seventieth anniversary. In all fairness, these photos were all taken in business class, where even today you won’t find people poking at sad trays of cardboard chicken, but it still isn’t as luxurious as it was back then.
