Blue cheese turned out to be just the tip that ‘blue on the street’ needed…
Guys, what is this new trend? Apparently, the urge to share online via photos and videos what delicious thing you’ve managed to get your hands on or are whipping up is huge—really huge. And you know what, of course we get that: we do nothing else! But the fact that a wanted criminal couldn’t resist that urge, resulting in his immediate arrest—that’s a different kind of story altogether!
Because this is already the second time this year that self-posted images driven by foodie-sharing urges have ultimately led to successful police work: just last month, a fugitive mafia boss was arrested based on his cooking videos on YouTube, in which he showed how to cook Italian classics. And this time, it’s the turn of a British drug dealer who couldn’t resist immortalizing a certain little cheese…
Good cheese intentions
Now, Blue Stilton is absolutely delicious, of course. Perhaps Carl Stewart, the criminal in question who was wanted for, among other things, drug trafficking, simply wanted to dutifully respond to the call to eat more cheese issued in many countries since the coronavirus crisis to support cheesemakers and cheese producers. And I don’t think Stewart had imagined that posting a photo of this one piece of blue cheese would result in him being put in handcuffs.

But that’s exactly what happened, because when Merseyside Police detectives brought in the fingerprint specialists, the connection was quickly made. Stewart posted the above photo on the messaging service EncroChat, which the National Crime Agency had managed to gain access to. Using a highly zoomed-in image and advanced techniques, they were able to uncover his identity.
Among a great deal of other criminal communication, they recently found this photo posted by Stewart under the username ‘Toffeeforce’—a name that apparently refers to a football club. But we also simply read into it that, besides blue cheese, this man is enormously fond of sweets… let’s just hope that after thirteen years of prison food (to which he has since been sentenced), toffee popcorn and cheese boards are waiting for him!
