That caused a rush toward our southern neighbors, as Dutch people drove across the border en masse to stock up. But that trip to Belgium is no longer necessary: as of today (Tuesday, May 6, 2025), the bottle of Big Mac sauce is also waiting for you in the Netherlands – exclusively at McDonald’s itself.

The secret of Big Mac sauce

People have been speculating about the exact composition of Big Mac sauce for years. Does it contain ketchup or not? Is it a kind of cocktail sauce? A mix of mayonnaise, pickle and mustard? Fans have been trying to crack the recipe for decades, and in my opinion, our recipe for Big Mac sauce comes pretty close. “This is our most mysterious recipe,” says Brett Gaasbeek, Brand Manager at McDonald’s Netherlands. “Our guests have been asking for it for years. Dutch people even drove to Belgium when the sauce was temporarily available there.”

And now the time has come. But there is one small catch: the bottle of Big Mac sauce is a limited edition. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.

For €2.95, you can get your hands on a bottle of Big Mac sauce. But beware: you can’t just pick it up from the shelf. First, you have to claim the bottle via the McDonald’s app. After that, you can pick up the sauce (and pay for it) at ‘the restaurant’ (I always wonder why MacDo calls itself a restaurant. Tasty sauce, sure, but it’s simply a fast-food chain, and I think we can be pretty clear about that, can’t we?) Still, it’s a smart (slash annoying) move by McDonald’s, because this way you get not only the sauce, but also the app on your phone.

The success of limited editions

That McDonald’s pulls this trick more often is clear enough. In 2024, they temporarily introduced a bottled version of their fries sauce – and it sold out in no time. Earlier this year, the return of the Chicken Sensation also caused queues at the restaurants. So expect a rush for the bottle of Big Mac sauce this time too. Want one? Don’t wait too long, because supplies are reportedly limited (marketing – they really know how to work it at Clown Town).
