Bring on this fresh trend: the New England IPA

Do you also think of enjoying a beer on a terrace at the first (or actually second) signs of spring? (Just as you probably think of enjoying a beer somewhere cosy in a café at the first signs of autumn..?) We certainly do! And while sweet, Radler-like beer doesn’t really appeal to me, I do love trying other fresh new beers. And according to a true beer sommelier, this is currently the beer with real hit potential:

An IPA, but one from a particularly interesting substyle. Beer sommelier Ivo Thijssen is certain: terrace owners should definitely have this on the menu this summer!

Spring fever
It’s the New England IPA, or NEIPA. According to Thijssen, the transition from indoor to outdoor hospitality also calls for a different beer—one that pairs even better with drinks on a terrace. ‘Beer consumption really is different. The dark days are behind us, and consumption of stouts and other heavy beers is declining,’ he says.
Substyle-wise
There are all kinds of IPA substyles, Thijssen explains in trade magazine Misset Horeca, such as white, black and double IPA. He also sees enthusiasts often returning to more classic styles such as dubbel and tripel, after possible experimental detours into, for example, a ‘peanut butter milkshake stout’. And what’s so great about a NEIPA?
‘It’s a little sweeter, a little creamier, easier to drink and incredibly inviting to have another glass—that’s important to me.’ Now that’s a fitting recommendation. Cheers!
