California has approved a ‘Skittles ban’: it will take effect in 2027
Taste the rainbow is going to be very difficult in California, starting in 2027. The US state has approved a new law, popularly known as the ‘Skittles ban’. This law would mean that the candy can no longer be sold: the new law states that four food additives will be banned — and you guessed it, they are supposedly found in Skittles.
Of course, all of California was up in arms (okay, it wasn’t actually that bad), because how are people supposed to manage without Skittles?
Skittles are safe for now… But Red Velvet isn’t
The new law bans red dye 3, propylparaben, brominated vegetable oil and potassium bromate. At first, titanium dioxide was also supposed to be banned, and that’s the substance found in Skittles — but it was not included in the final version. Phew. California can breathe easy again.
Except that the new law still means that Peeps’ Red Velvet cupcakes will have to disappear from store shelves. Well, sorry, but if I have to choose between Red Velvet and Skittles, I think I’ll go for the former after all… And the panic in California is once again in full swing. Fortunately, Peeps still has a few years to adjust its recipe, so who knows, maybe it will all work out.
