Stalmelk Stiekemerd

With the Stalmelk Stiekemerd election, Wakker Dier draws attention to the approximately four hundred thousand cows in the Netherlands that never go outside. Their milk carries no quality label and ends up in inexpensive mixed milk streams, which therefore consist of an average of one-quarter barn milk.

All nominated A-brands process these streams in their products; Campina Grass Butter found itself in the illustrious company of fellow nominated sneaks Kapteins Echte Boter, ERU Goudkuipje and Vergeer Gouda Jong Belegen. With more than 66 percent of the nearly 18,000 votes, Campina Grass Butter was named Stalmelk Stiekemerd of 2023.

Campina Grass Butter

‘Campina Grasboter Ongezouten Roomboter is made with milk from cows that eat spring and summer grass for an extra-soft butter… We draw the honest and pure power from nature. And you can taste that,’ says Campina.

Well, ‘honest’…: ‘When you think of grass butter, you think of cows happily grazing in the meadow. But this butter contains milk from cows that spend their entire lives indoors, often in cramped, filthy barns. Campina should be ashamed,’ says Anne Hilhorst of Wakker Dier.

What makes it even more painful is that Campina proudly states on its website that animal welfare is a top priority for them, while the site features almost exclusively photos of cows grazing outdoors. Quite a striking example of deception—the trick that food manufacturers, unfortunately, have mastered down to the last detail.
