Snackspert: Davie’s in Amsterdam is the newest must-go in the capital

Davie's Jordaan

Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, known in mayonnaise as Eke Bosman, shares his outstanding experience at Davie’s in Amsterdam’s Jordaan district this week. The place is even so good that he went twice. Because those sandwiches… oh boy.

Davie’s: a new sandwich shop in the heart of Amsterdam

Snackspert went to Davie’s in the Jordaan and was ecstatic: ‘go-there-right-now-because-soon-there-will-be-long-queues-place-of-the-year’. This is the W for winning, because I have never eaten such delicious pastrami as at Davie’s, a new sandwich shop in the heart of Amsterdam. The bread is as crunchy and crackly as an average Disney film featuring cute dogs, the meat is as tender as that hug in The Notebook and the mustard isn’t too sharp, while the pickle isn’t too sour. I want to work my way through the rest of the menu before it’s too late. Good heavens.’

He was so overwhelmed that he went back, and sure enough: another resounding success.

Davie’s hat-trick

Snackspert: ‘Rarely happens: I come straight back to a place a week after a review because I want to work my way through the rest of the menu. Davie’s in Amsterdam manages that. I found the pastrami sandwich so juicy and full of pleasure that it reminded me of watching Donnie Darko for the first time (might as well throw in a film tip while I’m at it), what an experience that was. So I immediately went for the rest of the sandwiches. The first: Mumbai. A kind of toasted sandwich with curry potato(!), mint, coriander and cheddar. What a delicious combination! And yes, potato on a sandwich, that’s perfectly fine. Especially combined with the melting cheddar, mmm. Brilliant.
The Lox, with thick slices of smoked salmon, is also genuinely excellent quality. The salmon is buttery-soft, but you never see it this thick at other sandwich shops. Add a little cream cheese and dill cucumber, wonderfully fresh. I’ll say it again here: brilliant.
Then there’s that Iberico coppa, also really delicious. Not my favourite because it perhaps surprises me less than the other sandwiches, but it is also of outstanding quality. Combining the ham with ricotta and tomato is simple, but excellent. Brilliant indeed.
What I actually want to say with these three sandwiches (and that pastrami from a week ago) is that Davie’s in Amsterdam is the newest must-go in our capital. And no, I don’t own shares in it; as a food lover, I’m simply incredibly happy that there’s something surprising and new to eat again. That deserves attention. And love. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
