Sal Meyer’s sandwiches are coming back

If you live in Amsterdam (and have done so for a while), you know: Sal Meyer’s sandwiches were legendary. So it was especially sad when they permanently closed their doors in 2019; the costs had become too high for what the kosher sandwiches brought in. At the time, the location was in Buitenveldert, and closing it also meant the closure of the only kosher lunchroom in the Netherlands. Such a shame.

But here’s some good news: Sal Meyer is BACK. Hooray, that’s good news for a Wednesday, right?

‘I decided then that this legendary establishment had to return’

And we have hospitality entrepreneur Rafi Angat to thank for that. When he moved to Amsterdam, four years ago, he heard the name Sal Meyer mentioned. ‘I soon heard about that legendary brand. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to taste it. I then decided that this legendary establishment had to return,’ he tells AT5.

Former owner Maurits Blog was brought in: ‘When we closed, people were, to put it mildly, not happy. There were people who came every day, sometimes just for a glass of tea. It takes some getting used to standing on my feet for so long again,’ says the retired chef. ‘But I’m simply delighted that my father-in-law’s legacy is being continued.’ Blog will help get the new location up and running over the coming weeks.

You can now find Sal Meyer in the kosher food court in Amstelveen, next to the Adagio hotel near Uilenstede.
