Caution advised: Albert Heijn warns about beetroot

Beetroot, delicious! Beets are definitely in my top 5 favorite vegetables. Are you also crazy about beets and planning to make this divine beet gazpacho from Restaurant De Kas this week or a delicious savory beet tart with rhubarb with organic beetroot from Albert Heijn? Then take a little care…

Albert Heijn has just decided to immediately remove AH Organic Grated Beetroot, AH Organic Diced Beetroot and AH Organic Cooked Beetroot with a best-before date of 8-5-2021 from its stores. The AH Organic Grated, Diced and Cooked Beetroot may contain Listeria monocytogenes. This only concerns products with this specific best-before date, so check your shopping basket or refrigerator.
Listeria hysteria
Listeria is a bacterium that can cause a food infection. The chance of contracting listeria is small, but the consequences can be serious. Pregnant women in particular need to be careful because in this group it can lead to miscarriage or premature birth. Listeria is mainly found in products stored refrigerated for a long time that are eaten without heating. High-risk products include raw-milk cheese, prepackaged smoked fish and raw animal products.

Albert Heijn issues warning
Consuming the organic beetroot with a best-before date of 8-5-2021 may pose a health risk, especially for young children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems and, as stated earlier, pregnant women. You do not have to throw the beets in the trash; it is better to return them to an Albert Heijn store, where you will be reimbursed the purchase price upon returning the product.
