Coffee keeps getting more expensive: failed harvests, high transport costs, inflation, you name it. Fortunately, not every coffee brand is raising its prices by the same amount. Prices also vary from supermarket to supermarket. Where is the best place to stock up?
We warned you about it earlier: coffee prices are set to rise sharply. Coffee harvests in Brazil and Colombia failed due to the weather, and the cost of transporting goods overseas has increased because of rising fuel costs and the coronavirus. Coffee had already become considerably more expensive in America and Germany, and now it is the Netherlands’ turn.
The Dutch Consumers’ Association compared the prices of eighty different coffee products at twelve supermarkets and saw it happen: ground coffee became 20 percent more expensive, the price of Senseo coffee pods rose by 15 percent, and you have to pay 24 percent more for Nescafé Dolce Gusto. So this is no longer a matter of a few cents; these are substantial price increases.
Smart supermarket
The study also showed that coffee prices are not rising by the same amount at every supermarket. The spokesperson explains that this has to do with the supermarkets’ purchasing policies: ‘Supermarkets that were smart and bought in time can still offer a lower price, while others have to follow market prices.’
Spar is the most expensive
Here’s what it comes down to: supermarkets Dirk and Vomar are the cheapest places to buy coffee. On average, coffee is 6 percent cheaper there than at their competitors. Jumbo is also 1 percent below average. Spar is the most expensive: there you pay 9 percent more than average, while Albert Heijn charges 2 percent more.

How can you keep your coffee budget somewhat under control? Keep an eye out for coffee being on sale somewhere, advises the Dutch Consumers’ Association. Switching from a leading brand such as Douwe Egberts to a supermarket own-brand coffee can also make a big difference. Doesn’t it just come from the same factory? And occasionally making a cup of tea instead of a pot of coffee is also a good way to save money, because tea has barely increased in price recently.
