Thirsty tales

Coffee, nap, action!

koffie

Coffee keeps you awake. That is common knowledge. But that coffee keeps you awake better if you take a quick nap afterwards is not. What does it turn out? Don’t choose either-or, but both-and. Both coffee and a nap for the best result.

A coffee nap—in American food lingo, a napuccino—greatly increases the absorption of caffeine, scientific research is said to prove. How does that work?

Adenosine

Science website Vox.com explains: Depending on your constitution, it takes about twenty minutes for coffee to actually activate you. If you use that time to sleep, you get extra rest while waiting for the desired effect. But that is merely a nice bonus.

The most important thing is that your brain shuts itself down during sleep, which increases caffeine absorption. The substance adenosine, which makes you sleepy throughout the day, is itself switched off during sleep. And as a result, nothing stands in the way of caffeine passing on its superpowers. Like a true caffeine bomb.

Got it? We don’t completely either. Just give it a try. It can’t hurt.

Filter coffee

Preferably drink filter coffee, because it contains more caffeine than a shot of espresso. Knock it back in one go—that’s important. Close your eyes immediately and sleep for a maximum of twenty minutes, so you don’t enter a deeper sleep. In other words: coffee, nap, action!

And for everyone who doesn’t have a bed at the office: keep a low profile for twenty minutes. That helps too.
