Consumer Association: this is the MOST EXPENSIVE supermarket and this the CHEAPEST
Kassa’s research (March 2023) already showed that you don’t get off quite as cheaply at Aldi as you might think (and no, we didn’t see that one coming either..). But the recently conducted research by the Consumer Association offers even more insight. The Consumer Association compared more than 100 own-brand products from 14 supermarket chains and shows where you pay the most and where you pay the least.
I don’t need to tell you that groceries have been crazy expensive for quite some time now. I’m shocked every time I buy eggs. And cheese. And vegetables – well, what hasn’t gone up in price? The biggest price increases in the Consumer Association’s research were for sugar (up 78 percent!), cauliflower (54 percent more expensive), and a bag of six brown rolls, which is now also 43 percent more expensive than before.
Most expensive supermarket: Spar
Spar turns out to be the most expensive supermarket. Basic products are 20 percent more expensive here (!) than what you pay on average at a supermarket. The average prices are the prices you pay at the two market leaders, Albert Heijn and Jumbo, and at Plus.
Cheapest supermarket: Dirk
According to the Consumer Association, supermarket chain Dirk van den Broek is the cheapest supermarket for basic groceries and the cheapest supermarket for A-brands. Research by the Consumer Association shows that, on average, you pay no less than 11 percent less at Dirk. That is why Dirk is once again awarded the ‘Lowest Price for basic groceries’ label, just as in 2022.

And Dirk will probably remain the cheapest – in response to falling purchasing costs, Dirk was the first supermarket to lower the prices of hundreds of products in April, while simultaneously introducing a price ceiling until the end of the year. This means that the prices of these products will remain at least this low or fall even further until the end of the year. These are everyday groceries from own brands and A-brands, such as bread, coffee, dairy products, baby products and personal care products.
No Dirk nearby, but still want to do your grocery shopping for less than average? Then you’ll get the best deal at Hoogvliet (8% cheaper than average), followed by Vomar (6%), Deka (5%), Lidl (3%) and Aldi (1%).
