Cool: a supermarket is coming to this church in The Hague

Most supermarkets aren’t located in particularly inspiring buildings. A boring shopping centre, an overly modern concrete box or a building that has seen better days—you don’t exactly get excited about it. In The Hague, they’ll soon have a different answer to that. A supermarket is coming to a very unusual building: a church.

We’ve already spotted quite a few divine addresses in churches, but we hadn’t seen a supermarket in a church before. Why not, actually? More and more church buildings are no longer actively used, so something like a supermarket is actually a great new purpose for such a historic and valuable building.

From demolition to supermarket

It concerns the Theresiakerk on Apeldoornselaan in The Hague. A Hoogvliet supermarket is coming there. Plans for a supermarket at that location already existed, but initially a property developer wanted to demolish the building. The church had not been used for years—since 2006—so something had to be done with it. But local residents strongly opposed demolishing the church. So the possibilities were reconsidered carefully, with a supermarket in the building as the solution.

Hospitality

So a Hoogvliet is coming to the building: a supermarket measuring 1,050 square metres. There will be a car park beneath the supermarket, with space for 23 cars. Part of the church will still be demolished. The sacristy, where the priest prepares the service, will make room for more parking spaces. An extra bonus: there will be hospitality venues with a terrace around the church. So you’ll be able to drink a truly divine glass of wine there.
