Corona madness: people queue en masse for Loetje Drive In

The hospitality industry closed, mandatory working from home, keeping your distance from others; everyday life has been completely turned upside down by corona. Everyone has to adapt, including Loetje. So they came up with a playful plan: Loetje Drive In. And it led to some bizarre scenes.

Steak lovers unite
As quiet as the average Dutch motorway is, that’s how busy it has been in recent days around restaurant Loetje in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. Countless enthusiastic steak lovers gathered at the special Loetje Drive In, mouths watering.
Pilot
Social media went wild when it was announced that Loetje Drive In would be launching. Initially, it was intended to be a pilot running from 27 to 29 March 2020 at Loetje aan de Amstel. Many people actually came to the Drive In. So many, in fact, that the municipality of Amstelveen received reports of traffic jams. “Turned out to be people picking up meals,” the Amstelveen police said on Instagram.
Extra days!
Loetje was therefore overwhelmed by the huge number of guests who came to the Loetje Drive In. As a result, they sold out much earlier than expected. But there’s good news too: “To make it up to you, the Drive In will also be open tomorrow (30 March 2020), despite the pilot, and we’ll be grilling the tastiest steak for you every day for the foreseeable future!” says Loetje.
From billiards café to steak temple
The story behind Loetje’s success is quite amusing, by the way: when Café Loetje was founded around 40 years ago, the intention was for it to be a billiards café. Ludwig ‘Loetje’ Klinkhamer then made a fortuitous mistake by putting his beef tenderloin steak on the menu. Before long, the place was packed with steak lovers wondering why that billiard table was in the way.

Loetje at home
You can now also eat the beef tenderloin steak with the real Loetje gravy at home. One portion costs € 18,95; fries and the famous salad can be ordered separately. And for enthusiasts, Bali steak is also on the takeaway menu, with the real Loetje sambal gravy!
Loetje Drive In is only open to cars and, unfortunately, not to cyclists, mopeds or pedestrians. You can place your order contact-free, pay by card and take your order away without contact.
