Corona news: chocolate Easter bunnies in quarantine
Belgian chocolatier Geneviève Trepant had been preparing for Easter for months, and her chocolate shop was full of large chocolate Easter bunnies. But then the shop had to close because of coronavirus. What now? Fortunately, creative Geneviève came up with an idea: the bunnies have been given face masks, so they are completely safe again.
Her bunnies are now called ‘Solidarity Easter Bunny’ and ‘Easter Bunny in Quarantine’, and they come in milk and dark chocolate. They have a face mask made of white chocolate and are sold by Geneviève through the hastily assembled webshop. The Easter Bunny in Quarantine can be ordered and delivered (if you live no more than 10 kilometres from the chocolatier) or kept for later collection, once everything is over.
Solidarity Easter Bunny
You can buy the Solidarity Easter Bunny for healthcare workers at the hospital in Namur. If you order such a bunny through the website, Geneviève will deliver it to the hospital. You will receive a photo of the delivery. In any case, the proceeds from sales of the face-mask bunnies will go to the King Baudouin Foundation, which will use the money to buy protective suits and face masks for the hospital.
Easter Bunny gets a beard and mitre
Jamin is also dealing creatively with the looming surplus of thousands of chocolate bunnies. They simply get a red cloak, their ears become a mitre, and they get a white beard on their cheeks. That basket of chocolate Easter eggs on their back? Yes, the Sinterklaas bunny will have to carry that around too. Handy, right? The Easter bunnies cannot spoil, because chocolate keeps for at least a year. The new outfit is made with ‘edible colour coating’, says the director of the chocolate factory. ‘Easter is, of course, just like Sinterklaas, a traditional gathering, so why wouldn’t we give these bunnies a second life?’
