Corona news: small egg cartons sold out
Restaurants closed, nursing homes closed, and everyone worried at every sneeze or cough. But those aren’t the only consequences of the coronavirus measures. The fact that there are no more small cartons of eggs on supermarket shelves is a direct consequence of the coronavirus crisis.
Most egg cartons are made at the Huhtamaki factory in Franeker. The production floor there has been adapted to the new circumstances: employees must wear gloves and face masks to avoid accidentally infecting one another, and of course they must keep a distance of one and a half metres. Only during the production of the smallest egg cartons—the ones that fit four eggs in—is it impossible to maintain sufficient distance. That is why the factory has decided to temporarily stop producing those egg cartons. The result: no four-egg packages in supermarkets.
Too many eggs worldwide
A major setback for singles who watch their cholesterol, or people who aren’t particularly fond of eggs. Perhaps it’s some consolation that it’s not only Dutch supermarkets that are running out of small packages: the egg-carton company exports worldwide, so the coronavirus measures in Franeker are being felt across the globe. The company expects to be able to resume production soon. Until then, it’s inconvenient but not insurmountable, according to Huhtamaki. The spokesperson’s tip: make an extra-thick omelette.
