Coronavirus inspires creativity: star chefs offer special takeaway menus

Unlike Italy and Belgium, in the Netherlands we can still eat out. But now that many people are staying home, restaurateurs and (star) chefs are looking for ways to counter further loss of income caused by the coronavirus. Such as takeaway and delivery of dishes.

It’s allowed, but for how much longer? That’s what I wondered last night when I ate my favorite falafel at restaurant NENI in Amsterdam. Reservations weren’t necessary and it was suspiciously quiet for a Friday night. This is forcing restaurants worldwide to come up with creative solutions to avoid suffering even more losses—or worse: heading for bankruptcy.
More and more restaurants are therefore now offering takeaway, and star chefs such as Joris Bijdendijk of RIJKS and Jermain de Rozario of De Rozario are joining in, as Jermain announced on Instagram.

RIJKS at home
Starting next Monday, March 16, star restaurant RIJKS will also begin delivering meals via Deliveroo and Uber Eats. The three-course menu costs € 32.50 and consists of green gazpacho to start, beef tri-tip as the main course and a chocolate brownie for dessert. Also included: a healthy amuse-bouche, spelt bread with butter and petits fours. RIJKS is, incidentally, still open as usual for lunch and dinner, although limited to a maximum of 75 covers.
Restaurant guide Gault&Millau launches special takeaway page
Following the example of Gault&Millau Belgium, restaurant guide Gault&Millau is launching a special page today featuring restaurants from the Gault&Millau guide or Gault&Millau POP guide that offer takeaway. There are currently 28 restaurants listed, including RIJKS in Amsterdam, Frenchie and Fris in Haarlem, Central Park in Voorburg, Gym & Gin in Rotterdam, Flores in Nijmegen, Hanninkshof in Enschede and Noble in Den Bosch. There will undoubtedly be more and more; the site is continuously updated.
