Delivery review: Café Panache’s delivery meal

Cafe Panache (1)

In these crazy corona times, restaurants are closed, so we’re happily eating out at home. Luckily, many new and special delivery and takeaway restaurants have been added. And we’re going to test them for you. That way, we can keep eating well while supporting our beloved hospitality industry. Today: Café Panache in Amsterdam.

This hotspot from well-known Amsterdam hospitality entrepreneurs has been located in an old market warehouse near the Ten Katemarkt in West for almost five years. They’re rapidly bringing trendy establishments to life, such as the recently opened colorful Frida Cantina and the equally brand-new Karavaan. Panache is a huge and flamboyant (‘panache’) restaurant full of attractive people in an exciting, dark setting. Here, you can order not only delicious cocktails and student-style pitchers, but also wonderful food made with fresh market produce. Unfortunately, we’re celebrating this lovely restaurant’s fifth anniversary at home.

The delivery

Bon appétit, Panache is written on the paper bag. I read it aloud in Julie Child’s voice. Home quarantine means you’re allowed to make jokes to yourself—and, moreover, laugh shamelessly at them. The food doesn’t look particularly good in the polystyrene delivery containers, but if I’ve learned one thing from this delivery adventure, it’s this: take the trouble to put everything on proper tableware, because that determines a large part of your experience.

What are we eating today?

We ordered Chicken Piri Piri with Roseval potatoes and a crispy chili dip (we could also have chosen homemade applesauce, but after all, this isn’t a children’s party) and finished with an amaretti cheesecake with passion fruit drizzle.

Juicy chicken

The main course is finger-licking good. Juicy and spicy. The crispy chili dip consists of two containers: a fairly simple chili sauce and one with fried onions, but the combination tastes good, as do the fried potatoes with mayo. I miss the vegetables found in the other main courses, but decide that in many cultures, potatoes are considered a fully-fledged vegetable.

The art of plating

Since there were no starters, I felt compelled to order a dessert. The cheesecake in the disposable container looks a little sad, but by draping it onto a plate, pouring the drizzle over it and scattering the crumble on top with Jamie Oliver–style flair, you end up with a reasonably presentable dessert.

The art of plating, as we’ll call it. The combination of the almond-cookie cheesecake and the fresh passion fruit is, incidentally, very easy to spoon away.

Should Café Panache join us at the table more often?

Sometimes you feel like a three-course meal, and sometimes a quick bite is nice too. That’s when Panache is a good option. A daily special costs 15 euros, Chicken Piri Piri just 13.50, and the cheesecake only 5 euros. At these prices, Panache is definitely welcome to drop by again. You can order through Uber Eats. Oh, and especially for their anniversary, they have a lovely gift: 2 main courses and a bottle of wine for just 35 euros. Congratulations!
