Delivery review: Jacobsz’s takeaway meal
During this crazy coronavirus era, restaurants are closed, so we’re enjoying eating out at home. Fortunately, many new and special delivery and takeaway restaurants are popping up. And we’re going to test them for you. That way, we can keep eating well and help the hospitality industry. Today: Jacobsz in Amsterdam.
Different every day
Jacobsz is located in a beautiful listed building on the Ringdijk in Amsterdam. In a lovely interior, you can enjoy hearty, flavourful dishes here, all at very reasonable prices. The best thing about this restaurant is the lovely atmosphere created by the team. Always friendly, warm and welcoming. And that is once again evident in these difficult times. Because they don’t want to let their neighbours down, they cook something different every day (!) of the week. With great success, because every day the neighbours line up in 1.5-metre queues, eagerly waiting to collect their bag of goodies. With this, they want to emphasise that they really are a neighbourhood restaurant. Unfortunately for everyone who doesn’t live in Amsterdam Oost, as they deliberately don’t deliver. An extra lovely touch: for every 7 meals they sell, they also donate one to healthcare workers in their district.
A heavenly surprise meal
At a brisk pace, I walk all the way to the distant East. You have to make an effort for a good takeaway meal. A heavy bag is handed to me through an improvised collection hatch. The surprise meal only needs to be heated briefly in the microwave at home, but thanks to the clear instructions attached to the bag, this works perfectly. Ping! And a little while later, my plate is generously filled with orecchiette (little pasta ears) with a creamy broccoli sauce with cime di rape (broccoletti, a funny vegetable cross between turnips and broccoli) and turnip greens, plus a wonderfully tender confit of Baambrugge piglet.
It comes with a tub of Parmesan cheese, two pieces of fresh sourdough bread from Fort Negen, and a fresh citrus butter. A mighty meal in a decidedly generous portion, leaving barely any room for dessert: a filled cake with a tart raspberry mousse.
Should Jacobsz join us at the table more often?
Absolutely! For €12.50, you get a truly delicious daily menu. That’s practically free, isn’t it? I’d almost move to Amsterdam Oost for it. Every week, an original menu is presented via Facebook, with a completely different dish every day. From tagliatelle with eel to beef rendang with sajur lodeh, international dishes whose descriptions alone will make your mouth water. Ideally, I’d treat myself to this fantastic restaurant every day.
