Dietitians aren’t happy with the ‘girl dinner’ trend

Girl dinner

Hot on TikTok: the ‘girl dinner’ trend. Scroll for a few minutes and you’ll undoubtedly see some extraordinary creations go by. But dietitians aren’t happy with the craze. Many girl dinners are not actually that healthy. Is it really that concerning? Or is it a case of nitpicking?

Girl dinners are actually a slightly lazier version of chaos cooking. With chaos cooking, you can still create some pretty impressive culinary masterpieces. The Big Mac pizza is a good example of chaos cooking, using the ingredients of a Big Mac as toppings on pizza dough. You still have to be fairly creative for that. With girl dinners, it’s… different. There is hardly any cooking involved at all.

Waffles with white beans or a can of corn

But what exactly is girl dinner? If you had to describe it in a few keywords: comfort food, lazy and delicious. You take whatever you like from the cupboard and throw it together. And that can really be anything. A plate of waffles with a can of white beans in tomato sauce, for example. Also spotted: macaroni shells with a knob of butter mixed in. Even a simple can of corn can be a girl dinner. As long as you like it – and as long as you’re feeling incredibly lazy.

Concerning trend?

Everyone understands that a bag of M&M’s with a can of cola isn’t very nutritious as a dinner. But that is precisely why dietitians aren’t very happy with girl dinners. An article in Metro includes a few statements from dietitian Laura Ligos, who spoke with CBS News. She believes that a meal should consist of sufficient carbohydrates, protein and calories, no matter how simple that meal is. So she does not support women eating too little because of girl dinners. Family physician LaTasha Perkins also says in the interview that she isn’t happy about it. She says she finds it very concerning that the trend normalizes unhealthy eating.

Of course, it makes sense that dietitians and family physicians don’t support the girl dinners on TikTok. But is it really, truly that bad to indulge in a lazy meal every now and then? We all feel like having a girl dinner sometimes, right? The commotion seems to us like making a mountain out of a molehill during the silly season.
