Shocking: Italian cheesemaker dies after being crushed by thousands of falling cheese wheels

A bizarre report from the Italian region of Lombardy. A 74-year-old cheesemaker met his death in an especially gruesome way. The man was crushed by thousands of falling cheese wheels.

The cheese wheels fell when a shelf broke. One cheese wheel already weighs around 40 kilos. Just imagine what happens when a shelf full of cheese wheels comes crashing down… An incredibly sad end for a man who had been a passionate cheesemaker for many years.
Grana Padano
You could certainly say that the Italian died in the line of duty. The man was moving the cheese wheels of Grana Padano – a hard, grainy Italian cheese – when one of the shelves gave way. His warehouse in the town of Romano di Lombardia contained 25,000 cheese wheels, including 15,000 Grana Padano cheeses. Almost all of the cheese wheels fell down. The warehouse and the cheesemaker are well known in the area, and the incident was met with shock.
12-hour search
When the family realized what had happened, they immediately called the emergency services. It turned out not to be easy to free the man from beneath the cheese wheels. Each cheese wheel had to be removed by hand. By the time the man’s body came into view, the emergency services had already spent 12 hours on the search.
Domino effect
It is not yet known how this terrible accident could have happened. There may have been a malfunction in the system the man used to move the cheese wheels. This is still being investigated. In any case, it is certain that a domino effect occurred when the first cheese wheel fell. As a result, the cheesemaker had nowhere to go, with a tragic ending as a consequence.
