Whuttt: here you pay no less than €50 for a Hawaiian pizza
It’s a never-ending debate: can pineapple be on a pizza or not? According to Davide Cerchia, the Neapolitan owner of pizzeria Via Toledo in Zwolle, ab-so-lutely not. That is exactly why he has hiked up the price of his Hawaiian pizza. And not by a little, either. Anyone who wants the tropical pizza has to fork out no less than €50.
He was fed up with all those people asking for a Hawaiian pizza. The pizza wasn’t even on the menu at his restaurant. As a Neapolitan pizzaiolo through and through, that goes against all his principles. In Naples, it is even forbidden to put pizza on your pineapple, simply because it is ‘inedible’. Davide tells RTL Nieuws that ‘a pizza should be as simple as possible’, and pineapple does not belong on it.
Hawaiian pizza? Pay up and do it yourself
Yet guests kept asking for a Hawaiian pizza. A major annoyance for Davide. Still, he did something no one expected: he put the Hawaiian pizza on his menu after all. But for €50. Plus, you have to put the pineapple on your pizza yourself. The Hawaiian pizza may be on the menu, but Davide refuses to ‘commit a sin’ by putting the pineapple on the pizza. With all these measures, the pizzaiolo had hoped that no one would ask for the Hawaiian pizza anymore. Things turned out rather differently than expected.
Viral
The stunt went viral—unintentionally—and as a result, people still ordered the pizza. Quite the opposite effect, then. Davide has since received thousands of reactions to the stunt, both positive and negative. He doesn’t mind. ‘If you want to pay me 50 euros to commit that sin anyway, be my guest,’ he says to RTL Nieuws.
Unpopular opinion
Because yes, there’s that divide between Team Hawaiian Pizza and Team Hawaiian Pizza Hate. And so there will always be products coming onto the market that are variations on the famous/infamous pizza. We’ve already seen Hawaiian pizza bitterballen in the supermarket. And the Hawaiian frikandel was trendy for a while too (yes, really). Maybe it’s an unpopular opinion, but I actually quite like pineapple on pizza *slowly backs into a corner*. Davide, may I still come by your restaurant sometime?
