The real reason why you get free bread in a restaurant

For me, the feast can already begin when the bread basket is placed on the table at the start of a dinner. Unfortunately, in the Netherlands you increasingly have to pay for it (and order it), but it hasn’t disappeared completely: the free bread basket. I especially love it at an Italian restaurant, preferably with that delicious garlic butter containing a hundred cloves of garlic. Delicious. But what is the reason for this free bread basket?

There are of course several explanations for this, for example when it’s an all-you-can-eat concept; in that case, the restaurant probably wants you to order less. Or when the restaurant bakes its own bread, they naturally want everyone to taste how delicious it is. But TikToker manvir.dosanjh has found another explanation—one you wouldn’t expect.
You actually eat more
You might expect to be less hungry because you’ve already eaten all that bread with butter or oil, but the opposite is true; you actually order more. Because when you eat the bread, your blood sugar rises… And then it ‘crashes’. What happens next? You get cravings again, making you more inclined to order that dessert after all. So if you don’t want to feel bloated and don’t want to risk eating too much: leave the bread alone… Because then you’re more likely to skip dessert.
