When sunflower oil runs out: these are good alternatives

It won’t be long before there is not a single bottle of sunflower oil left to be found in the supermarket. A blow for all snack bars and snack fanatics whose deep fryers are regularly roaring. Because what are we supposed to fry in now?

Sunflower oil is at risk of running out because of the war in Ukraine. The country is one of the largest producers of sunflower oil, after all. Supermarkets and the hospitality industry can make do with their current stocks for a few more weeks. After that, they will be forced to look for an alternative.

So what will you buy instead? These days, the oil aisle is well stocked, so there are plenty of options. One of them is rice bran oil. Its higher smoke point and pure consistency make it ideal for deep-frying. It is somewhat expensive, though. Olive oil could also work; never use extra virgin, but choose a mild variety.

Don’t hoard!

Coconut oil, ghee, avocado oil, peanut oil and rapeseed oil are also good substitutes, especially the last two. Peanut oil, made from peanuts, has a different flavor but can be heated well. The same goes for rapeseed oil. This one is also considerably less unhealthy because rapeseed oil is low in saturated fats.

In short: plenty of other options. So grab a different bottle next time and simply try out which one works best for you.
